I am totally psyched about a new project underway here!
I’ve been thinking off and on for a few weeks about writing an ebook to put up here, but could never get my head wrapped around it enough to identify a good theme. Then the other night in the Dojo chat, we were talking about how unsuspecting noobs get sucked into believing all kinds of garbage, just because it comes from someone with a high post-count or appears on a well-known blog.
Since a lot of my early knowledge about SEO was picked up on blogs and forums, I can empathize with the folks out there trying to learn by osmosis. I started out reading a ton of blog posts every day, and racked up several thousand posts on various forums myself. It didn’t take me too long to figure out who was full of knowledge and who was full of hot air.
But it isn’t always obvious. And everyone may not have as sensitive a bullshit-ometer as I do. Hell, let’s face it, some people are just plain gullible, and believe everything they read. Hey! If it’s on the Internet, it must be true, right?
That’s when this idea started to take shape. I’m sliding into sixty years, so there’s no way I’m going to be around long enough to write a book separating all the TRUTH from all the SEO Bullshit out there. Besides, I haven’t figured it all out myself. But then I remembered the adage about giving a man a fish, and feeding him for a day, but teaching him how to fish, and feeding him for a lifetime.
So the notion of critical thinking being something that can be taught more easily and with better results was born.
But again, I don’t know it all. Hell, I consider myself a full-time student of SEO. I’d need some help. A lot of help.
So I reached out. I contacted over forty people. Some of them I know pretty well, some I have only had casual contact with. They’re all people that are well established in their respective fields, some of them household names (at least in an SEO’s household). I told them what I had in mind, and the kind of help I needed from them, and the volunteers started flooding in!
Now initially, a few weeks ago, my thoughts of an ebook were along the lines of selling it here on my site. But at this point, I certainly wasn’t about to try to profit from the goodwill of my colleagues. So I thought, ‘why not offer the book free?’
Then I got a piece of junkmail in my inbox telling me how I should buy a .org domain, and embrace a cause for fun and profit. Meh!
But that’s how the idea evolved into a charity event!
I’m still working out the kinks, talking to folks at a few of the charities that are known for minimum overhead and maximum benefit. but in the next few weeks, the book will be done, and we’ll launch our charity drive. 100% of the proceeds will go to the selected charity, which will be identified soon. So keep an eye peeled. If you’re not already subscribed to our feed, it’s up in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
This will be for a good cause, and it will be good information! You’ll make your donation, and walk away with a valuable resource. I’m not going to name the contributors yet, but I will say that if you’re reading this, it means you are the sort of person that’ll recognize most of the names on the list when you see it.
